Design Destination: Catalina Cool

Located only 22 miles from the mainland, since its inception Catalina Island has been the fun and easy escape for many Southern Californians. Small in size but big in recreation and relaxation, the historic destination offers a dynamic range of hospitality and outdoor experiences. Avalon, one of Catalina's two towns, is recognized as the southern-most city in Los Angeles. The idyllic harbor town transforms you to a Mediterranean Island with its narrow streets and hillside homes, while the shopping, dining and iconic Catalina Casino offer modern entertainment.

In May 2017, the Catalina Island Group opened the doors to Harbor Sands beach in an effort to re-energize the village of Two Harbors. Guests can sip on delicious tropical-inspired cocktails and enjoy South Pacific fare while lounging in one of six furnished palapas or beach chairs.

At Harbor Sands, visitors can enjoy a true South Pacific experience without traveling halfway around the world,” said Randall Herrel, Sr., president and chief executive officer of the Catalina Island Company. “Harbor Sands beckons guests to relax under the sun and feel the caress of cool ocean breezes. It’s the perfect spot for boaters, campers, couples, and everyone looking for a quick escape from their hectic mainland lives."

Also known as the "Island of Adventure" the Catalina Island Group upped the stakes for outdoor thrill seekers, with the launch of the Catalina Aerial Adventure. Emersed in the heavily wooded and rugged Descanso Canyon, the experience gives guests five self-guided aerial trails that provide views of native plants and wildlife. Each tour features obstacle courses, climbing walls and zip lines, with views of the Pacific Ocean.
