Designer Crush: Vance Burke

1. Who is your biggest role model?

Albert Hadley—he had the most incredible way of combining the past with the present that was at the same time both classic and modern.

2. Which movie or play do you wish you could have designed the set for?

I am waiting for the sequel: Fifty Shades of Beige.

3. What is the best way to gauge a client’s personality before starting a project?

Determining which is the most important—time, money, or look!

4. What new design trends are you excited to integrate into your work?

Living in Southern California, we have been blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor rooms for a long time. Because of new textile technology, we will often use exterior fabric indoors.

5. How do you completely unwind?

A midnight swim in Palm Springs.

6. If you hadn't become a designer, which career would you have pursued?

At this point, I could be a marriage counselor or an accountant. As a decorator, those things tend to take up most of your time!

7. What’s the worst pre-designer job you’ve ever had and why?

Bank teller—it’s never fun counting someone else's money!

8. What’s your favorite recipe?

A glass of chardonnay and two sleeping pills.

9. Create your perfect playlist for us.

Lightning round!

10. Would you rather shop new or vintage?

I always shop vintage first to tell a story and then create custom pieces to complement the look.

11. First celebrity crush?

007 because of the cars, clothes, and the interiors.

12. What’s your hidden talent?

Setting a table. It’s very important to set the drama for a dinner party.

13. Best restaurant in your area? Where is it?

My favorite restaurant is at MOMA in NYC!

14. SF or LA?
