Five Great Art and Design Events This Weekend In Los Angeles

It's not too late to do some holiday shopping for great design in Los Angeles. There are still plenty of pop-up shops, secret sales and open houses this weekend.

Bergamot Station

Tomorrow at Santa Monica's sprawling art complex Bergamot Station, nearly three dozen galleries and shops present 30 OPEN DOORS, for a one-night only extended house open house. In addition to work by artists at the Santa Monica Museum of Art, there will also be fine jewelry, handmade papers, and more holiday gifts. Admission is free and the galleries are open from 5pm to 10pm. Bergamot is located at 2525 Michigan Ave in Santa Monica.

Tasting Table alerts us to Echo Park's artisanal grocery store, Cookbook's, next door shop chock-a-block with gift-worthy household items. Called No. 2, the shop is stocked with black walnut-bowls (carved from a single block of wood), cast-iron spice mills from Sweden, and clay donabe cookware from Japan. Cookbook is located at 1549 Echo Park Ave.

Isamu Noguchi’s Chess Table estimated at $30,000 – 50,000 went on to realize $187,500.

Did you miss Los Angeles Modern Auction's event last week? No worries. While the event set a record for the modern design and art auction house with its highest grossing auction ever, there are still plenty of lots still available for purchase. The list of unsold lots now available for purchase include a Frank Gehry custom desk, a Paul McCobb walnut and brass cabinet, a Sam Maloof dining table and art by Ed Ruscha, Richard Serra, Donald Judd and Chuck Close.

For the last two weekends, Bauer Pottery's seconds showroom have featured products 30% off their retail pricing. Now the downtown showroom has one "secret" weekend left for sales, with an additional 30% off stickered prices. This is also the last weekend the showroom will be open to the public until March 2012. While the "seconds" are items that don't meet the standard of quality for regular retail sales (due to imperfections such as glaze skips, uneven glazing or glazing pinholes), most are pretty close to being "firsts." The showroom, located at 3051 Rosslyn Street is open Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 5pm.

Another last chance – if you missed last weekend's trunk show at notNeutral in Larchmont, the Rios Clementi Hale housewares spinoff has one of its best products for sale on its web site. One of our absolute favorites, the city collection of porcelain plates is reduced from $1,000 to $900. The full collection of 20 plates features 20 different cities including Berlin, Las Vegas, Brasilia, Mexico City and of course Los Angeles.
